Irish Writing – English Reading

6 May 1999 – Late August 1999

A collaboration between the Special Collections at Senate House Library and the Early Printed Books department at Trinity College Library, Dublin. Featured are Irish writers, poets and dramatists from the early nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century who were popular with both English readers and audiences.

A variety of images of Ireland and the Irish are presented, from the early Irish poetry translated into English by the remarkable Charlotte Brooke in 1789, to the hunting and partying Anglo-Irish aristocrats of the novels of Molly Keane.
