Newspapers and Current Affairs

Locating Newspapers & their indexes

Find newspapers and indexes by title using the Library catalogue:

  • Titles not held at Senate House Libraries may be found within the University by using the Union List of Serials for the University of London, or Search25 for the London area, or for elsewhere in the UK Copac or Suncat, the Serials Union Catalogue for the UK.
  • The holdings of the British Library Newspaper Collections can also be checked online. Use the British Library catalogue advanced search, and select ‘Newspaper Library’ from the drop-down menu.
  • Local newspapers for the London and South East region can be located in other libraries via NEWSPLAN. There is also the British Newspaper Archive, which is free to search. Full text is available through, for example, the British Library.
  • A number of full-text digital news archives can be accessed remotely via registration with Westminster City Council Libraries. Registration is open to all UK residents. These resources include the Economist 1843-2006, Guardian and Observer 1791-2003, Illustrated London News 1842-2003, Picture Post 1938-1957, Newsbank (archive of national & regional newspapers and magazines), UK Press Online (Daily Mirror Archive 1903 – current, Daily Express Archive 1900 – current, Sunday Express Archive 2000 – current), Library Press Display (international newspapers with a 3 month backfile).
